She was born t 1 CONC he 4th child after three 1 CONT boys, and two sisters followed her. Unfortunately the two boys immediate 1 CONC ly above her had died 1 CONT within months of birth, so she became the second child of the family. He 1 CONC r father was manager of a 1 CONT family butcher firm in Bolton, and business was good. So good that Mill 1 CONC y often hitched delivery 1 CONT rides in a prestigious client's Rolls Royce! From a house with only outs 1 CONC ide facilities, they moved 1 CONT within Bolton to Deane, to a three storeyed affair, with electricity! A 1 CONC t the age of 11, Milly moved 1 CONT with the family to Liverpool, Sheil Road, as the business expanded. 1 CONT She went to Mount Pleasant School, where she stayed right throughout he 1 CONC r schooling and on to 1 CONT teacher training, and she eventually took up a teaching post at that sel 1 CONC f same school where she 1 CONT herself had grown up. She was very bright, and her grand child Pippa rec 1 CONC ords her saying "I was 1 CONT nearly always top of the class, and never lower than 3rd". 1 CONT The family had now moved out of Liverpool, to the prosperous suburb of K 1 CONC notty Ash, just down 1 CONT the road from where another young man was to later put that particular p 1 CONC art of Liverpool on the 1 CONT map. 1 CONT Milly's father, Joseph Burns, was a very sociable fellow, who loved comp 1 CONC any, music and song, and 1 CONT it was Milly who learnt the piano and played all manner of tunes at hom 1 CONC e for the evenings of 1 CONT revelry and companionship that made him a very popular chap, but were al 1 CONC so destined to be his 1 CONT downfall. His pals used to supplement Milly's pocket-money playing "Nap" 1 CONC , and from that time 1 CONT on, she loved a game of cards. 1 CONT The family survived the 14-18 war, although towards it's end, her belove 1 CONC d elder brother, George, 1 CONT volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps, crashed in his plane, but surviv 1 CONC ed in one piece. 1 CONT After that war, however, business was not so good, and the family fortun 1 CONC es dwindled, and money 1 CONT was tight. In 1926, her father, who adored her, as she did him, died, a 1 CONC t the age of 52, leaving the 1 CONT family in some financial difficulty. But somehow or other, with all th 1 CONC e children, now all nearly 1 CONT grown up, and mucking in, her mother kept the family house in Knotty As 1 CONC h going, and it was 1 CONT always a busy household and a lovely atmosphere. 1 CONT In 1928/9, however, a young man on the Liverpool Post came calling, an 1 CONC d after what I believe was 1 CONT a difficult courtship, he proposed. The courtship was intense. After wal 1 CONC king her home after an 1 CONT evening out, the young man would write a letter, post it, and the lette 1 CONC r would arrive promptly for 1 CONT her the next morning. Marriage in Liverpool at that time to a non-Cathol 1 CONC ic was barred, and no 1 CONT Catholic church would marry them, so in 1930, Cyril Morton took her dow 1 CONC n to London and they 1 CONT married at Corpus Christi in Maiden Lane, just off the Strand. 1 CONT Cyril, felt he was ready for bigger things, and moved to London to wor 1 CONC k on the Daily Express, and 1 CONT moved Milly into a flat in Belsize Park, where she was pretty lonely. He 1 CONC r consolation was that she 1 CONT managed to get Cyril to buy her a grand piano, on which she loved to pla 1 CONC y, and shortly after, 1 CONT probably to the neighbours relief, they moved out to Whitton, in the Twi 1 CONC ckenham area, close to an 1 CONT old school and university friend. 1 CONT In 1934 her first offspring was born, Kit, and just before the war, in A 1 CONC pril 1939, Roger arrived. 1 CONT Cyril was doing well on the Daily Express, as their Chief crime reporter 1 CONC , and on the outbreak of 1 CONT hostilities whistled Milly, and family, up to the Colwyn Bay area, to jo 1 CONC in her brother George, his 1 CONT wife Muriel and daughter June, where the two families shared a house tog 1 CONC ether for the rest of the 1 CONT war. Food rationing was a continuing problem, and on one occasion the fa 1 CONC mily discovered, on 1 CONT pouring out a somewhat weak cup of tea, that no one had put any tea int 1 CONC o the pot! And Roger's 1 CONT butter ration always ended on her plate! 1 CONT Cyril continued to make his way towards the top in Fleet Street, and the 1 CONC re were always things to 1 CONT do and places to go to, first nights and the like. But Milly never cam 1 CONC e to like the glitzy and shallow 1 CONT life that she saw. She was always a private person, who from her upbring 1 CONC ing had learnt to respect 1 CONT money, and a job, and she was always fearful that her husband, despite h 1 CONC is reluctance to join the 1 CONT rackety life of the Fleet Street man, would lose his position in the uns 1 CONC table world of journalism. 1 CONT They moved to Hampton on Thames, and Cyril had moved upwards again to th 1 CONC e Daily Mirror in a 1 CONT senior capacity; the two boys were away at Douai, and Milly and husban 1 CONC d enjoyed a comfortable 1 CONT life during the fifties, - but, as Milly feared, in 1955, a boardroom co 1 CONC up saw Cyril out of a job at 1 CONT the age of 55. Not for too long, however, and they continued to enjo 1 CONC y a relatively comfortable 1 CONT existence, moving to Ashtead, Surrey, in 1960, until Cyril retired compl 1 CONC etely in 1965. 1 CONT During this period, Milly played the harmonium for Mass every Sunday, sh 1 CONC e gave talks and music 1 CONT recitals, and she ran a local Ladies choir. She loved to go to the Alber 1 CONC t Hall, or any ballet, opera 1 CONT or concert she could get tickets for. 1 CONT Around this time Kit got married and three years later Roger followed su 1 CONC it, and although she was 1 CONT as critical as any mother casting her eye over a wife-to-be, Milly late 1 CONC r admitted that her sons could 1 CONT not have done better. 8 grand children arrived at regular intervals, an 1 CONC d she was lucky in seeing 1 CONT them often, - but not too often. But she was always interested in each a 1 CONC nd every one of them, even 1 CONT though she could, on occasion, as all grand-parents, be a little tactles 1 CONC s, and a shade critical. She 1 CONT loved them all and they loved and respected her. 1 CONT During the seventies it was obvious that Milly's knees were giving a lo 1 CONC t of trouble, and gradually 1 CONT her walking became extremely painful, and this was to dog her for the re 1 CONC st of her days. Cyril died 1 CONT in 1984, but she continued to drive an automatic car for a further few y 1 CONC ears, until her sight 1 CONT deteriorated too far. 1 CONT Finally in 1992, at the age of 87, she became a member of this Friary Pa 1 CONC rish when she came to live 1 CONT with Jo and Kit, where she lived until her death on January 9th. She wa 1 CONC s a gracious old lady 1 CONT during that time, listening to Radio 4 and Classic fm, and watching, (bu 1 CONC t later listening ) to the 1 CONT Tele, keeping abreast of the news at all times. She loved quizzes, cross 1 CONC word puzzles, and comedy 1 CONT programmes. She enjoyed sport in general, but she loved Wimbledon, and h 1 CONC ad watched, as far as 1 CONT she was able, every match since the days of Drobny and Co. She supporte 1 CONC d Liverpool, if asked, 1 CONT unless they were playing Bolton. Her mind continued to be first rate t 1 CONC o the end, enjoying 1 CONT University Challenge on the night before she was taken into hospital, an 1 CONC d although she was very ill 1 CONT in her last few days, she had rarely had a real illness during her lon 1 CONC g life. 1 CONT She was, and remained, a staunch Catholic throughout, with a simple beli 1 CONC ef in Christ, the Rosary, 1 CONT which she said every night, and Christianity. These simple beliefs cam 1 CONC e occasionally under stress, 1 CONT as events such as the September 11th took place, but she recovered, as w 1 CONC e all do, and placed her 1 CONT trust in the Lord. 1 CONT She went into Hospital saying her Rosary, and as she lay, semi-comatos 1 CONC e on the stretcher, with her 1 CONT family around her, she continued to pray. 1 CONT Milly had a good life and a long one; it had its ups and downs like ever 1 CONC yone has, but she retained 1 CONT her intelligence, her Liverpudlian sense of humour, her interest in he 1 CONC r family, and by no means 1 CONT least, her faith.
